  • South Bank

    skate park, book market,

    interesting people & brutalist architecture

Although the south bank of the Thames stretches from the North Sea all the way in to the Cotswolds, the South Bank location in London usually refers to the area around the South Bank Centre, including the Royal Festival Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall and adjacent to the National Theatre, the British Film Institute. You will also find the London Eye, London Aquarium and views over the river to the Houses of Parliament and the City. Photographically the area between these buildings and the river offer a perfect opportunity for street photography.

There is a skate park in the undercroft (underneath the South Bank Centre) which provides great action opportunities. The brutalist architacture also offers an interesting backdrop to the people enjoying their time, or simply passing through. There is also an outdoor book market which is open everyday 10am to 7pm. The book market can be found where the South Bank passes under Waterloo Bridge. The market is particularly large and busy at the weekends.

Many bars and food stalls are also available so you won't go hungry or thirsty. The South bank offers dramatic skylines, candid moments, and great opportunities whatever kind of street photography you love.

The lighting is particularly good in the late afternoon on a sunny day!

This location is right in the heart of London on the South side of the Thames. Just minutes away from Waterloo train an underground stations and just a short walk over Waterloo or one of the Golden Jubilee bridges. It is very close to Leake Street, where you can find the Banksie / Grafitti tunnel which is another great street photography locations.

I have included a few images from the South Bank to give you idea of what to expect.

These images use avariety of approaches and techniques to street photography; including candid moments, street portraits, movement (incuding ICM and other approaches), reflections and details.

If you like the look of the South Bank then get in touch to arrange a tailored street photography guide or a custom workshop for you (and your friends).

PLEASE NOTE: The South Bank is interesting on any day of the week but it's at it's best at the weekend.
